Vocabulary Schedule
If you are choosing to go the traditional vocabulary route, that is, center your word wall around lists of high-impact words, then you might benefit from a set schedule that will keep you on track. If you see your kids every day, consider the following weekly schedule:
Monday: New words and definitions with PPT that has related images, students copy onto chart (15 minutes)
Tuesday: Students create Frayer-model-style flash cards (20 minutes)
Wednesday: For homework, students write sentences (no class time)
Thursday: 10 minute quickwrite using all vocabulary words (10 minutes)
Friday: Vocabulary quiz (10 minutes)
With everything else we have to do, it may seem overwhelming to include explicit vocabulary instruction. However, if you choose this route, establishing and sticking to a set schedule will help ease the burden of instruction (and lesson planning!).
